Connect windows xp computers using crossover cable

I how I use crossover cable to move files from old XP windows computer to new Windows 7 computer? Thank you, Hank. I am having the same problem but I can't even reach the stage where your recommendation comes in. I have an older windows XP laptop and now having a new windows 7 laptop. Similarly, I want to transfer files from the old to the new laptop. However, when I plug in the cross-over cable, nothing was shown on either of the laptop that indicate a connection.

I thought it was the cable's problem but when I connect the windows XP laptop to a windows PC, it shows the connection. Is there any setting on windows 7 PC that I have missed?

I have realised that the connection kept "flicking". A other way to try transferring is to connect both computers thru a router or wireless router via connecting a pair of standard Ethernet cables running two the two laptops.
